About The Center

The Cerebral Palsy (CP) Hand Service at Hospital for Special Surgery began in 1994. The purpose of the service is to address the orthopedic needs in the upper extremity for patients with cerebral palsy and other neurological disorders. Problems related to extremity posturing, hygiene and functional limitations are addressed in the shoulder, elbow, hand, digits and thumb. Problems are addressed through in depth assessments and surgical reconstruction when indicated. All ages of patients may attend the service and patients with all types of involvement are appropriate for referral.

This site is designed to address the educational needs of patients and their families as well as provide information to professionals working with people with cerebral palsy. The professional areas are geared toward therapists, physicians and surgeons, but may be visited by others who are interested in more technical information.

Our Mission

  1. To improve the functional and postural problems in the upper extremity for patients with cerebral palsy.
  2. To educate patients, families and health care professionals about assessment, surgical indications and planning, surgical techniques and post-operative care for patients with upper extremity dysfunction.
  3. To perform research and qualitative studies in order to improve the care for patients with CP who have upper extremity impairment.
