Hi Christine, I am writing rather belatedly to your question about CIT in children. While I agree with the author of the repsonse to you, that CIT has been mainly studied in adults. I do not agree that it may not necessarily work in children with hemiplegic CP. I do believe the same type of systematic studies that have examined the effect of this intervention in adults following stroke should be used to examine the effect on this intervention on involved hand and arm function for children with hemiplegic CP. In Dr. Andrew Gordon's lab in the Department of Biobehavioral Studies at Teachers College, Columbia University we have studied the effects of CIT on involved upper extremity function in 6 children with hemiplegic CP between the ages of 9-12 years and have reported the results for three of those children (see Charles et al, 2001 Pediatric Physical Therapy 13,2: 68-76) In addition, we are currently recruiting 40 children with hemiplegic CP between the ages of 4-16 years.This is a three-year grant to look as several issues concerning the effect of this intervention on involed upper extremity function.
