TES is Therapeutic Electrical Stimulation. It is a technique of applying a low level of electricity to muscles to encourage activity. The historic use of TES (also called E-stim) was to apply enough current to a muscle to actually fire the muscle causing a contraction in order to help the patient isolate a muscle. It has been, and continues to be used in CP, spina bifida, post polio, spinal cord injury and also in nerve and soft tissue injuries. A newer concept within E-stim is FES or Functional Electrical Stimulation where the input (often at multiple muscles) is directed to specifically aid in a task such as reaching or walking. A different use of TES is the "Canadian" method, and probably the one you are referring to. This entails using a very low, imperceptible amount of electrical current at night while the patient is sleeping. The theory is that the stimulation increases blood flow, nerve impulse transmission, tissue growth and subsequent function. Both FES and Candian e-stim types have plenty of information sites on the web by searching (therapeutic AND electrical AND stimulation). Both types need to be administered by a professional at first usually through rented small units (machines). Both types are advocated to be augmented by a PT or OT exercise program. Good luck! CB
