Finding the right therapy program is an important part of your child's care. All states have some form of provided treatment for children with special needs, which are not dependent on income levels. As I learned when I moved to California from New York, each state is different in the organization of provided services. Many publicly funded services are for younger children only and may be specific in how the patient qualifies. It is certainly the first option worth checking out since it is very cost effective. Families also can pursue private therapy, which needs to be reimbursed by insurance. Sometimes both of these types of services are provided in the same centers. For either option, your referring physician (orthopedist, neurologist, pediatrician) may have some suggestions for therapy. Another place to contact is your local children's or Shriner's hospital. They should have information on the funded options and may also have information on private services. In a small town, you can try the local hospital's pediatric department. I would also try UCP (we have a link in "other options") and Easter Seals. Lastly, our "other options" page describes how things work in New York if that is where you need information. Good luck! Hllo, I have been using constrained induced therapy with several children over the past 5 years. Most of these children have either had strokes at birth or have erbs palsey. One MUST make the therapy sessions fun for children or they will become uncooperative. The key is carry-over, that is, having the parents perform the therapy many times per day. It also helps during feeding time...when a child is hungry they will use their affected extremity. Of course, dont let the child be hungry, but encourage the use of the affected arm during feeding. Placing sweet cereal on a table top certainly helps with fine motor skills. All sessions must be functional, fun and playful. Constrained induced therapy can be very difficult for the parents, since their child will do some initial crying!!

I sdiagnosed with RA and fibromyalgia 6 years ago. As the story goes I have seen at least 5 Rheumatologists. I have been told by an orthopedic surgeon. Why are you here now you have no elbow joint left. Since then I lost my medical insurance and have been receiving what the doctor here likes to call comfort care. In the past year my left elbow has also contracted. My mucsles seem to be involved and it is all pulling. My arms are alost at a 45 degree angle and they have not been pain free for over two years. I have all the symptoms of RA with a negative rh factor. I have not responded to anti-inflammitory treatment , steroids, or cortisone injections. Now I feel my wrists starting to twist. I have had a very difficult time getting any information on elbow contractures after hours of searching the web. Does this sound like anything anyone knows about out there. I don't know how long I can take this pain or when I am goign to lose my arms altogether. Help!
